gkkworks provided architectural services for the Topanga Library, designed to reflect the town's rich intellectual, literary, and artistic traditions, and to provide an inspirational showcase for the city's passionate commitment to lifelong learning. A true community library, the overall design process included numerous community outreach meetings where various concepts were explored and consensus was achieved. The new 11,048 square foot library offers ample parking, spacious reading areas, a homework center, group study room, teen center, and children's area with an outside reading patio. Separate adult and children's sections feature state-of-the-art technology, self-checkout stations, online computer terminals, free Wi-Fi access, and an opening-day collection of 42,000 books and materials. The library is situated above a ground-level, 48-stall parking garage, to allow patrons views of the surrounding hillsides from the reading rooms. The project is certified LEED Gold, and received the Project of the Year Award by the American Public Works Association.
