It was the vision of the Vail Valley community that Vail Mountain School become one of the premier independent college preparatory schools in the country. As a result, Vail Mountain School hired gkkworks to master plan and redevelop its existing campus.
The master plan provides for a new 87,000-square-foot K-12 school building for it existing 325 students that remains consistent with the Vail Mountain School’s educational philosophies. Notable elements of the master plan include a new regulation soccer field (artificial turf), relocation of an historical homestead cabin, and the addition of eight two-bedroom faculty apartments.
The architecture of the school was designed to minimize the building mass against the hillside, as well as reflect a traditional mountain vernacular by incorporating board and batten siding and a stone base. The first phase of the school building was completed in the Summer of 2004; the final phase of the school was completed in December 2005.
