klipp, a division of gkkworks, provided architectural services for this project. Located in the Del Mar neighborhood near the Aurora Arts District, the West Middle School campus is a critical piece of the neighborhood. A new 55,000 SF, one-story addition houses the new Media Center and the 6th grade community. The addition was added between the existing 1949 middle school and the historic William Smith High School (circa 1932), enabling the existing buildings to be connected with a primary organizing element. Renovations include the upgrade of all major building systems while respecting community context, historic structure, and ongoing operations of each facility. Masonry color variations articulate a composition of the existing buildings and the new addition. Existing windows were replaced with new window fenestration to enliven the existing building's appearance and bring more daylight into existing classrooms.
Recipient of the Restoration/Renovation, Silver, Gold Hard Hats Award; and the Summit Design Award (additions and renovations project) CEFPI, Rocky Mountain Chapter.
