Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Facility

Department of Veterans Affairs, San Diego Healthcare System

San Diego, California

The VA, San Diego Medical Center selected gkkworks to provide architectural design and construction management services for this major hospital expansion and renovation. The project adds a new 50-bed, 115,000-SF Spinal Cord Injury Center; a 43-bed, 44,000-SF Community Living Center; and a new 800-car parking structure that will eventually increase to 1,600 spaces.

The underlying reference for form and space organization of the project design encourages patients to access roof gardens and courtyards to promote healing. Our design approach is holistic and focuses on the patient's mind, body and spirit. This is achieved by the incorporation of Planetree and other patient-focused design concepts that facilitate patient comfort and recovery. The facility provides state-of-the-art healthcare to veterans suffering spinal cord injury and will include diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
