gkkworks provided architectural services as part of a design-build team for this new 10-bed ICU (including two isolation rooms), located on the fourth floor of Sharp Memorial Hospital's central tower. Because the ICU serves as an overflow unit rather than serving a specific patient population, the design accommodates a universal approach, allowing adaptation to subspecialties. The rooms are configured to adapt to varying levels of acuity and are able to accommodate numerous equipment configurations.
Recent trends toward higher patient acuity levels result in longer patient stays and a higher level of family involvement, so accommodation for the family has become an essential part of modern patient room design. The design of this ICU embraces the "Sharp Experience," which supports family interactions, access to nature, and other Planetree design principles.
