gkkworks was retained to provide architectural and engineering design services for phase one of the emergency department remodel and expansion effort. As a major medical center serving an increasing population, existing facilities were already at capacity and segregated into multiple areas by prior expansions. gkkworks' plan involved a phased remodel incorporating a nearby under-utilized area to create additional treatment spaces, increasing from 50 to 73 spaces throughout the emergency department. The plan focused on increasing overall throughput and efficiency, and using rapid medical evaluation (RME) to assess and manage non-critical patients, resulting in reduced patient waiting times. New lobby and triage areas were designed for efficiency and patient privacy. In addition to planning and design, gkkworks was also the contractor for this project.
